New voices: the podcasting workshop series.

Podcasting has become a powerful medium for storytelling, representation, sharing knowledge, and building communities. To empower our local community members —especially those who historically have been underrepresented or counted too many barriers to other similar mediums— with the skills and space to harness the potential of podcasting, we organized a series of workshops that covered the basics of podcast creation, from conceptualization to production and publishing.

1- To introduce community members to podcasting and its potential for personal, community, and cultural expression.
Introducing community members to podcasting involves exposing them to the medium's versatility and power. This includes explaining the basic concept of podcasting, the various formats it can take (interviews, storytelling, news, etc.), and its accessibility to anyone with a voice and a message. By highlighting podcasting's potential for personal, community, and cultural expression, the workshops showed how individuals can share their unique stories, address community issues, and celebrate cultural heritage through this platform. Participants learned how podcasting can serve as a tool for amplifying underrepresented voices and fostering a sense of community.

2- To provide participants with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to create their podcasts.
Providing foundational knowledge and skills includes teaching the basics of podcast production, such as scriptwriting, audio recording, editing, and publishing. These workshops covered technical aspects (like using microphones, recording software, and editing tools) as well as creative elements (like crafting engaging content and effective storytelling techniques). All the participants also learned about podcast distribution platforms and strategies for reaching their intended audience. The goal was to equip them with the confidence and competence to independently produce their own podcasts.
This objective is essential because it ensures that participants are not just inspired but also equipped to take action. By gaining the necessary skills, they can transform their ideas into tangible projects. This foundational knowledge demystifies the process of podcasting, making it accessible to beginners. 3- To facilitate the creation of pilot episodes for participants who attend all workshops by providing them free equipment they can keep and use to produce future episodes.
Facilitating the creation of pilot episodes involves guiding participants through the entire production process from concept to final product. Each workshop session built on the previous one, progressively covering different aspects of podcast creation. By the end of the series, participants had completed a pilot episode of their own podcast. Providing free equipment (such as microphones, headphones, and basic recording kits) to participants who completed all workshops ensured they had the necessary tools to continue producing podcasts independently. Acquiring this equipment can be a significant barrier to entry, and removing it helps sustain participants' momentum and creativity.
This objective is critical for several reasons. First, it provides a tangible outcome for participants, giving them a sense of accomplishment and a concrete starting point for their podcasting journey.
